Professor Tim Murray, a leading Australian Archaeologist, has argued in the Weekend Australian of July 4-5, that there is a global shortage of archaeologists. Specifically, he notes that a rebound in the resources sector will create additional demand for appropriately qualified and experienced heritage consultants. The Australian National Committee for Archaeology Teaching and Learning has established a Register of consultants willing to give undergraduates work experience (see this AAA home website). The Rudd Government's infrastructure initiatives raise the spectre of rapidly increasing volumes of land use and permit applications - of which archaeological/heritage compliances are an integral component.
