Map showing location of the Arrawarra midden, NSW (published in Australian Archaeology 47:61).

Preliminary findings from salvage excavation of Arrawarra I (NPWS Site No. 22-1-21), an Aboriginal shell midden eroding from the fore-dune at Arrawarra Beach, New South Wales (NSW) mid-north coast (Fig. 1) are reported. The midden lens, containing an excellently preserved faunal suite, appears to be in a primary depositional context. This finding runs contrary to expectations for open middens in mobile barrier dune contexts along the mid-north coast.
