The Bruce Veitch Award for Excellence in Indigenous Engagement 2009
Luke Godwin was awarded the Bruce Veitch Award for 2009 for his tireless passion and commitment to Aboriginal people in the management of their cultural heritage, particularly in central Queensland, in a career spanning more than 20 years in government and private consultancy.
Luke is sincere in his belief that Aboriginal people should be able to exercise a primary role in the management of their cultural heritage. He has worked with numerous Aboriginal communities throughout eastern Australia, and his nomination included letters of strong support from several Aboriginal people and organisations with whom he has long and successful working relationships. These letters indicate their respect for him and for the way he has supported them in gaining protection for cultural heritage, improving knowledge about cultural heritage and increasing the self-esteem of traditional owners.
